Learjet 40은 Learjet 45를 24.5인치 단축한 기종으로, 2004년 1월 취항하며 Learjet 31A를 대체했습니다. 2004년 10월 선보인 40XR은 이륙 중량을 높이고 추력을 높인 TFE731-20BR 엔진을 달아 상승과 순항 속도가 빨라졌습니다. Learjet 70이 뒤를 잇기 전까지 두 버전을 합쳐 약 133대가 제작되었습니다.
