كانت Learjet 55 الطراز الوحيد الذي بُني من سلسلة Learjet 50 المخطط لها، وصُممت بمقصورة أكبر من طائرات Learjet السابقة وزُوّدت بأجنحة صغيرة (winglets) طوّرتها NASA ومحركات Garrett TFE731-3. وتلتها طائرات الإنتاج منذ عام 1981، وسُلّم منها 147 طائرة، منها نسخة 55C اللاحقة بزعانف دلتا لتحسين الثبات والأداء على المدرج.
