كانت Learjet 70 الرفيقة الأقصر لطائرة Learjet 75، وقد طوّرت Learjet 40XR بقمرة القيادة Vision وأجنحة صغيرة (winglets) مائلة ومحركات TFE731-40BR. لم يُبنَ منها سوى نحو عشرين طائرة قبل أن تركّز Bombardier على الطراز 75، ما يجعلها طائرة خفيفة نادرة لكنها قديرة بأداء يبلغ Mach 0.81.
