Electra flies a fixed-wing aircraft from heliport-style sites

Electra said on September 22 that its hybrid-electric EL2 demonstrator flew from heliports, taxiways and other short access points in Virginia. The tests support the planned nine-passenger EL9 Ultra Short aircraft.

  • Flights announced September 22, 2026
  • EL2 demonstrator flew at Virginia sites including Roanoke–Blacksburg
  • Tests used helicopter-style instrument procedures
  • Program supports the nine-passenger EL9 Ultra Short
  • Electra says it has more than 2,200 aircraft on pre-order

Electra says its hybrid-electric EL2 demonstrator has completed flights from a heliport on a commercial airport ramp, along with other short access points such as taxiways and vertiport-style areas. The Virginia flights included Roanoke–Blacksburg Regional Airport and were conducted under an FAA advanced air mobility pilot program.

The aircraft tested point-in-space procedures and dedicated instrument routings, the kind of operating logic normally associated with helicopters. Electra is using the two-seat EL2 to build data for its planned EL9, a nine-passenger Ultra Short aircraft. The company says it has more than 2,200 aircraft on pre-order from more than 60 operators.

This matters because Electra is not pitching a classic eVTOL air taxi. Its idea is a fixed-wing aircraft that can use much shorter spaces while keeping some airplane advantages in range, speed and efficiency. If regulators accept those procedures at scale, regional private and business travel could gain more usable departure points without needing full new airports.
