The Sultan's 747-8 is regularly cited as the most expensive private aircraft in the world, with figures around $600 million including a completion featuring gold-plated fittings and nearly 5,000 square feet of cabin. A qualified pilot, he has been photographed at the controls, including arriving at an ASEAN summit flying the jumbo himself.

He famously ordered an Airbus A380 'Flying Palace' in 2007 but sold the order before delivery. The 747 was reported in 2023 to have flown footballer Neymar to Riyadh for Al Hilal.
