Rumours, legends and things people swear are true

Every private-jet story you have heard at a dinner party — the gold-plated 747, the $3,000 biscuits, the jet that outclimbs a fighter — checked, and labelled honestly.

“Private jets are far more dangerous than flying commercial.”

It depends entirely on which 'private jet' you mean. Corporate flight departments flying professionally crewed jets have accident rates comparable to — and in some years better than — the airlines. On-demand charter under FAA Part 135 has historically run a somewhat higher rate, and owner-flown light aircraft are higher again. Lumping all of it together as 'private' is what produces the scary headline.

“Jets flown by a single pilot are accidents waiting to happen.”

Single-pilot certification is a deliberate engineering standard, not a shortcut: aircraft such as the Citation CJ series, Phenom 300, PC-24 and Vision Jet were designed so one pilot can manage everything, with autopilots, autothrottles and, in the Cirrus, a whole-airframe parachute and emergency autoland. The data show single-pilot jets can be flown very safely — but the second pilot remains the single most effective safety feature, and most charter operators insist on one anyway.

“Empty-leg flights let you fly private for 75% off.”

Empty legs — repositioning flights that would otherwise fly with nobody aboard — are real and genuinely discounted, typically 25–75% off the normal one-way charter price. But 75% is the top of the range, not the norm; you take the operator's route and time, not yours; and the flight can be cancelled if the original client changes plans. Cheap for a private jet, still not cheap.

“Owning a private jet costs at least $1 million a year, no matter what.”

For a mid-size or large-cabin jet flown a few hundred hours a year, $1–4 million in annual running costs is realistic. But the 'minimum' claim fails at the bottom of the market: a very light jet or turboprop flown 150 hours might cost $400,000–$700,000 a year all-in. The number is a reasonable rule of thumb for the aircraft people picture when they say 'private jet', and wrong as a floor.

“Air Force One is basically the President's private jet.”

It is a private aircraft in the sense that no one else gets to book it. But 'Air Force One' is a radio call sign for any US Air Force plane carrying the President, the two current VC-25A jumbo jets are military aircraft flown by the 89th Airlift Wing, and they are hardened, self-contained flying command posts. The nearest civilian equivalent — a Boeing BBJ 747-8 — is a distant cousin.

“The Bombardier Global 8000 is faster than Concorde.”

No. Concorde cruised at Mach 2.04; the Global 8000 is certified to Mach 0.94 and cruises around Mach 0.90–0.94. What Bombardier actually claims is that it is the *fastest civil aircraft since* Concorde — a true statement, and one that got compressed in headlines. The jet did briefly go supersonic (Mach 1.015) in a 2021 test dive, which is where the confusion took root.

“Landing at St Barts is the most dangerous in the world — you need a special licence.”

St Barthélemy's Gustaf III airport is genuinely demanding: a 2,100 ft runway, a steep descent over a hilltop road and a beach at the far end. Pilots must complete a specific check-out to operate there, and jets are effectively excluded — the traffic is turboprops like the Twin Otter and Pilatus PC-12. But 'most dangerous' is a listicle title. Airports such as Lukla in Nepal, Paro in Bhutan and Courchevel are harder; St Barts is famous because it's photogenic and rich.

“London City Airport bans most private jets.”

Not a ban — a technical bar. London City's approach is flown at 5.5 degrees, nearly double the standard 3 degrees, and its runway is under 5,000 ft. Any aircraft using it must hold a specific 'steep approach' certification, and the operator must be approved. Many business jets have it (CJ family, PC-24, Falcon 7X/8X, Legacy 500, G650, Challenger 350, Falcon 6X and more). Many don't. And there are noise limits, a Sunday morning closure and a curfew that bite regardless.

“A jet card is cheaper than chartering.”

Per hour, a jet card is often *more* expensive than a well-negotiated charter on the same route. What the card buys is certainty: guaranteed availability with short notice, a fixed hourly rate, no repositioning charges and no haggling. For someone who flies 25–50 hours a year on short notice, that can work out cheaper overall than paying peak charter prices. For someone flying predictable routes with flexibility, on-demand charter usually wins.

“Fractional owners share one specific jet with a few other people.”

On paper, yes: you buy a 1/16th or 1/8th share of a specific aircraft with a tail number, and that's what you own for tax and legal purposes. In practice, you almost never fly on it. NetJets, Flexjet and their peers operate a pooled fleet and send whichever aircraft of your category is nearest — that's the entire point. The 'one specific aircraft' is a legal fiction with a registration certificate.

“With a private jet you can land at any airport you like.”

You can use vastly more airports than airlines do — around 5,000 public-use airports in the US versus roughly 500 with scheduled service — and that is the real magic of private flying. But 'any' is wrong: runway length, surface, lighting, night and instrument restrictions, noise curfews, slot-controlled hubs, weight limits and, for international trips, customs availability all narrow the list. Your pilot chooses; you suggest.

“Private jets are the biggest source of aviation emissions.”

By total volume, no: private aviation produced roughly 15–20 million tonnes of CO2 in 2023, around 2% of commercial aviation's emissions and well under 4% of all civil aviation's on the highest estimates. By emissions per passenger, yes: a private flight can emit five to fourteen times more per person than an airline seat on the same route, and the roughly 250,000 people who fly private have a per-capita footprint almost nobody else matches. Both halves are true; the rumour picks the wrong one.

“Boom is bringing back supersonic travel by 2029, and private supersonic jets are next.”

Boom's Overture is an airliner — 64–80 seats, for airlines such as United and American — and the company's own schedule targets certification and entry into service in 2029, a date independent analysts widely expect to slip into the 2030s. Boom's XB-1 demonstrator did go supersonic in January 2025, a real milestone. But a supersonic *business* jet is not on Boom's roadmap, and the one company that was building one, Aerion, collapsed in 2021.
