The Learjet 40 is a Learjet 45 shortened by 24.5 in, and it replaced the Learjet 31A when it entered service in January 2004. The 40XR, introduced in October 2004, added higher takeoff weight and uprated TFE731-20BR engines for faster climb and cruise. About 133 of both versions were built before the Learjet 70 succeeded them.
