“A private jet needs a runway of at least 10,000 feet.”

Verdict: Most business jets can use runways of 3,500–5,500 ft at typical weights, and turboprops and light jets go shorter still. A 10,000 ft runway is what a fully loaded widebody airliner needs on a hot day. Even the biggest business jets — Global 7500, G700 — quote balanced field lengths under 6,000 ft. Whole point of a private jet is landing at the small airport near where you're going.

Published take-off distances at maximum weight, sea level, standard day:

  • Pilatus PC-12 (turboprop): about 2,600 ft
  • Cirrus Vision Jet: about 2,000 ft
  • Phenom 300E: about 3,200 ft
  • Citation CJ4: about 3,400 ft
  • Challenger 350: about 4,800 ft
  • Falcon 8X: about 6,000 ft
  • Global 7500: about 5,800 ft
  • Gulfstream G700: about 6,250 ft

Landing distances are generally shorter than take-off distances. Hot weather, high altitude and heavy fuel loads all lengthen the requirement — an Aspen departure in July on a full tank is a very different calculation from a winter departure at sea level.

The reason the myth exists is that big-jet numbers get quoted at worst case. A Boeing 747 or A380 at maximum weight can need 10,000 ft or more. Business jets have much lower wing loading and powerful engines for their size, so they use a fraction of that.

Of the roughly 5,000 public-use airports in the United States, airlines serve about 500. Business aircraft can use most of the rest. That accessibility, not the champagne, is the actual product.
