Jet of the day: Dassault Aviation Falcon 8X

The Falcon 8X stretches the 7X trijet and adds a redesigned wing and uprated PW307D engines for a 6,450 nm range, enough for Hong Kong to London non-stop. Its three-engine layout and digital flight controls allow steep approaches into airports like London City, and it burns notably less fuel than twin-engine rivals of similar range. Range 6,450 nm, 12 seats, about $64,000,000 new and roughly $5,000 an hour in fuel and maintenance.

Fact of the day

At 41,000 feet the Global 8000's cabin is pressurised to the equivalent of just 2,691 feet, versus 6,000 to 8,000 feet on most airliners, which manufacturers say reduces fatigue and jet lag. (Bombardier specifications)

From the archive, 2006: Eclipse 500 certified: the very light jet boom

The Eclipse 500 received FAA certification in 2006 and won the Collier Trophy as the first very light jet, promising a $1 million twin-jet that would spawn air-taxi networks. Thousands of orders poured in, but production costs and the 2008 financial crisis bankrupted Eclipse Aviation in 2008 after about 260 aircraft. The design survives as the Eclipse 550, and the VLJ idea lives on in the HondaJet and Cirrus Vision Jet.

Hangar talk: “Elvis Presley's jet had gold-plated seat belts.”

TRUE — True, and still on display at Graceland. Elvis bought a 1958 Convair 880 from Delta in 1975, named it *Lisa Marie* after his daughter, and spent more than $800,000 refitting it with a bedroom, conference room, lounge, gold-flecked bathroom sinks, suede chairs and 24-karat gold-plated seat-belt buckles — including one on the bed, because regulations required a restraint. It was the most extravagant private airliner of its day.
